Training Mission
Hi, my name is Cory Wilson, and I’m the horse trainer here at Colt Camp Horsemanship. Colt Camp is located in Buffalo County, sitting atop the beautiful bluffs in Alma, Wisconsin.
It’s my mission to make sure that when horses complete their training at Colt Camp Horsemanship—whether it’s an unhandled colt that’s being started, an older horse with behavioral issues that need ironing out, or a horse here for a tune-up—their owner leaves with a confident, willing, and mentally prepared partner—a horse that is a pleasure to own and ride, no matter the direction they choose to take it.
To fulfill this mission of handing over a confident, willing, and mentally prepared horse to its owner, a few non-negotiables are always in place: putting the horse first, building a solid foundation, and making a conscious effort to practice key fundamentals—leadership, consistency, and patience. Just as important, I focus on gaining and maintaining each horse’s trust and respect throughout the entire training process.
There is no rigid, set "method" or "technique" when training horses if it’s done correctly and with thought. No one method or technique fits all—what works for one horse can completely fall apart on the next. All horses share the same core instinctual motivations; however, every horse is unique in how they perceive and process information, in their ability and the time it takes them to learn, and in how they react to pressure and stress. Differences from one horse to the next can come from life experience, genetics, and temperament. The intricacies of my training at Colt Camp are based on each horse's individual needs.
I truly enjoy training horses. I do it for the love of the horse and the art and process of it all. Not only am I teaching the horse and setting it up for a successful future, but I am also constantly learning and evolving with each and every horse I train. The beauty of horse training is that you never know it all—it’s an endless, ongoing education and a humbling, rewarding experience. If you want to be great at something and want to continue to level up, you have to love it, respect it, and be willing to keep learning every single day. I’m always striving to be a better horseman today than I was yesterday.
